As part of our new partnership with the Paideia Centre for Public Theology, Professor Craig Bartholomew joins us as Senior Research Fellow and Associate Faculty member. He will continue to be based in Canada but will be involved in our research supervision and will visit us for teaching.

Craig Bartholomew is currently H. Evan Runner Professor of Philosophy and Professor of Religion and Theology at Redeemer University College, Ancaster, Ontario, Canada. He was born in Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa and studied theology in the University of South Africa and Oxford University (where he also gained a Blue in tennis). He was ordained in the Church of England in South Africa in 1986.

He gained his doctorate through Bristol University, studying under Professor Gordon Wenham, looking at the interrelationship of philosophy, literary theory and Old Testament hermeneutics, focused exegetically on readings of Ecclesiastes. His commentary on Ecclesiastes (Baker Academic, 2011) was published this year.  His book Where Mortals Dwell: a Christian view of place for today (Baker Academic) won the 2012 Canadian Christian Writing Award in the Nonfiction Book - Academic category. The Canadian Christian Writing Awards are 'designed to raise the profile of Canadian writers who are Christian, and to encourage them in the pursuit of excellence in the art, craft, practice and ministry of writing'.

Paideia is an academic Christian study centre founded by Craig Bartholomew which is committed to relating the gospel to all areas of Christian life. One of its most signifiant projects is the international Scripture and Hermeneutics Seminar, which has published some of the most important scholarly contributions in that field in recent years. Some of the Paiudeia research students joined us for our first postgraduate researchers' conference in summer 2011.  Read what some of them said about their experience.
