This unit

1 examines the development of the church's worship, sacraments and ministry during the first five centuries
2 explores the threat which the early churches faced both from without (Jewish and Roman persecution) and from within, most notably Gnosticism, Monarchianism and Arianism
3 considers the development of the New Testament Canon and the influence of Constantine on the church and its theology
4 provides a particular focus on the Christology of Athanasius, the Alexandrians and the teaching of the Cappadocian Fathers
5 considers developments in early British Christianity, the early Christian Apologists and the spirituality of the Desert Fathers.
