John is an Australian with parish experience in the Diocese of Sydney and previous teaching experience in Canada. He came to the study of theology from a background in science.

He has recently been honoured by the University of Bristol with the title Visiting Professor.

John's scholarly interests focus on the Gospels and he has contributed the Luke volumes to the Word Biblical Commentary Series (1989, 1993) and the Matthew volume to the New International Greek Testament Commentary Series (2005).
