Lord Carey returns to Trinity

Naming of Henry Martyn House, 25 June: Lord Carey (Principal of Trinity College 1982-87) and Canon George Kovoor outsite the newly named Henry Martyn House next to the college, with Mrs Mary Bateman-Wang. The generosity of her father, former Clifton student Revd Canon Martyn Bateman, helped us to buy the house.
26 June 2009
Lord Carey of Clifton, former Archbishop of Canterbury, returned this week with his wife Eileen to Trinity, where he had spent five years as Principal (1982-87).
Lord Carey had come to give an open lecture on 25 June at Trinity College on ‘Leadership in a World of Flux' and to reflect on a lifetime of ministry for former students, staff and friends as part of Trinity's three-day summer event ‘Church with a Future and a Hope'. The lecture and the dinner beforehand were attended by the Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Christopher Davies, and the Lady Mayoress, Mrs Sue Davies.
Earlier in the day the front lounge of the college was named Carey Lounge in Lord Carey's honour (bottom photo). Trinity Principal Canon George Kovoor spoke warmly of the Careys' contribution to the college and Eileen, who was presented with flowers, replied on their behalf.
Also included in the day was the naming of a house next to the college, Henry Martyn House (after the Bible translator and missionary to Iran and India). It is hoped that the house in Bishop's Close will become a centre where church leaders from overseas can come to study. Some of the money for purchasing the house was given by a former Clifton student Revd Canon Martyn Bateman, whose daughter Mrs Mary Bateman-Wang was at the ceremony (top photo).
Two of the three days were held as study days on ‘The Morphing of the Church' and ‘Making all Things New', led by Dr Eddie Gibbs, Professor of Church Growth at the School of Mission, Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California.
