Revd Dr Mike Butterworth
Associate Faculty Adviser for Open Learning
Mike Butterworth is Adviser for Open Learning. He devised the original Open Learning course when he was on the staff of Oak Hill Theological College; it was originally known as OHEC (Oak Hill Extension Course). When Mike took over as Principal of the St Albans and Oxford Training Course, he further developed the course for use in training of ordinands and lay ministers, and it was relaunched under the name ICES (Interactive Christian Extension Studies). Mike was Director of ICES until it merged with Trinity College Open Learning at the end of 2009.
Mike is an Old Testament scholar who has had wide experience of extension education; he worked in India for many years with TAFTEE (The Assocation for Theological Education by Extension), as well as being in pastoral ministr. He is on the board of Matheteou, which has links with theological education by extension programmes around the world.
He is Minister of Broughton Community Church in Buckinghamshire and an external examiner for St Mellitus College, London.
