Open Learning Award Service

Four people received Open Learning/ICES* certificates in a church service in Hertfordshire on Wednesday 14 July. They had all qualified by completing six Open Learning courses.

The ceremony, held at St Martin's Church Preston (in the photo), was led by the vicar, Revd Elizabeth Bunker, who is herself a former ICES student. The Trinity principal, Canon George Kovoor, encouraged people to follow Jesus as his disciples and to recognise his call on their lives. Current and graduating students led the prayers and Bible readings.

The four people (from two different tutor groups) spoke about the way they had learnt more about the Bible through doing the courses. In Alison Jackson's case, the course had helped her to learn what God wanted her to do: she is now applying for ordination in pioneer ministry.

Courses started in  April

Six Open Learning groups started new courses in during April 2010.  To find a group near you, go to Open Learning tutor groups.  Otherwise, contact us and we will explain how to start a group.

Open Learning used to train lay preachers

The PCC at St Mary's Haddenham, near Aylesbury, has decided to use our Open Learning courses to train their lay preachers.  Meeting on a Sunday afternoon, before their evening service on a fortnightly basis seven members of the preaching team will be meeting with their vicar, Rev Margot Hodson, who is tutoring them as part of an exciting initiative to enable those involved in leadership in the local church to know their Bible better.

Eleven Open Learning groups started new courses in January

January saw eleven Open Learning groups start new courses, with seven new groups and four groups that were previously studying as part of Interactive Christian Extension Studies (ICES).

Open Learning course for Lent!

One church is going to use the 8-week course Snapshots from the Life of Christ as a Lent course. As well as providing a suitable course, it will serve as a taster for the Open Learning programme.
