Tutor takes part in at international conference
22 November 2010
Revd Dr Knut Heim, Tutor in Old Testament at Trinity College Bristol, is presenting two papers this week at the Annual Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature in Atlanta, Georgia (19-23 November).
The Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) is the oldest and largest international scholarly membership organization in the field of biblical studies. Founded in 1880, the Society has grown to over 8,500 international members including teachers, students, religious leaders and individuals from all walks of life who share a mutual interest in the critical investigation of the Bible. During the conference, about 5,000 biblical scholars from all over the world will explore the Bible from the perspective of recent research.
Knut's first paper is entitled 'Solving the Riddle of ‘Amon: Wordplay in Proverbs 8:30'. It will explore the meaning of the word ‘Amon (= master worker; little child; faithful?) in Proverbs 8:30. His second contribution will be on a specialist panel celebrating the completion of Michael V. Fox's second volume (Proverbs 10-31) in the Anchor Yale Bible Series. The panel will use this opportunity to reflect on the present state of the field through the lens of Fox's work.
As Program Unit Chair for the Wisdom in Israelite and Cognate Cultures section of the Society, Knut will help to coordinate the work of the Wisdom section, which runs five different events with 22 academic papers and a book review panel.
As a member of the Advisory Board of SBL's International Collaboration Initiative (ICI), Knut contributes to an initiative of the society to foster biblical scholars outside North America and Western Europe through the ICI Online Books Project and the ICI Mentoring Program (see http://www.sbl-site.org).
Knut's paper 'Proverbs 26:1-12: A Crash Course on the Hermeneutics of Proverb Reception', presented at last year's SBL conference, has just been published in Die Welt des Orients 40:1 (2010), 34-53.
In January 2011 Knut Heim takes over as our Director of Postgraduate Research. We have a flourishing postgraduate research department.
